I recently photographed Helen Slack, the Head of a Birmingham school who was retiring early because of her opposition to the current Ofsted assessment procedure. The images appeared in The Daily Express.
I really enjoy the challenge of interpreting the briefs supplied by the various news-desks. My good friend and fellow photographer Graham always told me to "shoot the brief and then shoot for yourself". In other words, make sure you've fulfilled the brief but then create images that you, the photographer on the scene, thinks might add a different perspective on the story. In this case, it was a shot that I'd taken in addition to the initial brief that was published.
